JOSEPH MEDEIROS is an actor and classicist. He is currently studying classics at Columbia University, and he has appeared on Broadway in Three Tall Women, Groundhog Day, Matilda, Doctor Zhivago, Wicked, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, Grease, and Big. He is working on a performance project centered around reciting the books of the Odyssey in Ancient Greek.

JONATHAN BRICKLIN spent his twenties learning Greek, at various New York Universities and Institutes.  Now 65, with short-term memory eroding, he sees this as his memory 401k. A lapsed member of Actor's Equity, his 2 last gigs were singing a Greek song at the New York Open Center, where he was  a Program Director for 10 years, and a role in the film Ask For Jane.  A board member of the Society for Consciouness Studies, his books and articles on consciousness can be found at jonathanbricklin.org

Poet /collagist STEVE DALACHINSKY was born in Brooklyn after the last big war and has managed to survive lots of little wars. He is the recipient of an Acker Award for poetry and in 2014 was honored with a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture. In addition, his collection The Final Nite (Ugly Duckling Presse) won the PEN Oakland National Book Award. Other books include Where Night and Day Become One (great weather for MEDIA, 2018), Fool’s Gold (Feral Press), A Superintendent’s Eyes (Unbearable Books /Autonomedia), Flying Home (Paris Lit Up) in collaboration with German visual artist Sig Bang Schmidt, The Invisible Ray (Overpass Books) with artwork by Shalom Neuman, Frozen Heatwave (Luna Bisonte Prods) in collaboration with Yuko Otomo, and Black Magic (New Feral Press).

AIMEE HERMAN is a Brooklyn-based poet and performance artist looking to disembowel the architecture of gender and what it means to queer the body. Find Aimee's poems in the anthology Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics (Nightboat Books, 2013), in the full-length collections meant to wake up feeling (great weather for MEDIA, 2014) and to go without blinking (BlazeVOX books, 2012), and the recent chapbook rooted (dancing girl press). Aimee is an adjunct professor at Bronx Community College, a faculty member with Poetry Teachers NYC, and a writing mentor/workshop facilitator for the Red Umbrella Project through their memoir writing drop-in classes specifically for those in the sex trades. Born in Santo Domingo, SERGIO SATÉLITE moved to New York City in his mid-teens to become a Calvinist preacher, an undocumented mime, a factory worker, a Spanish interpreter and a student of analytic philosophy. A spoken word performance with music, inspired by Jacob Riis’ pioneering journalism.
    Staten Island OutLOUD hosts this special event on How the Other Half Lives, the ground-breaking work by Jacob Riis, 19th century photo-journalist and social activist.  Riis was among the first to photograph life on the streets of NYC's Lower East Side, as many of our forebears came to the US to build new lives, and to help build the nation.
   Music of the era performed live by special guests Elle La Forge, Rob Landsman & Rich Barbera.
   Riis' book combined photography with a compelling narrative about the brutal challenges that hard-working people, especially new Americans, overcame to survive in New York City.
   How the Other Half Lives helped to raise awareness of urban housing and public health issues.  Its publication helped to bring about reform in fire safety, fair housing, and child labor, among other important reforms.

IRISH TRAD SEISIUN - Founded by local favorites, Linda Hickman, Douglas Barr, and Bob Wright, and managed by Staten Island Arts Folklife, the Staten Island Seisiún offers musicians and music lovers an afternoon of music and shared camaraderie onstage and off. As per tradition, these open sessions are informal gatherings dedicated to the practice and performance of Irish traditional music unlike an ordinary concert. The Staten Island Seisiún brings together Staten Island’s own with great practitioners of traditional Irish music from the other boroughs and New Jersey, and is open to musicians of all levels and ages. All are invited to bring their own instruments and join in to expand repertoire and technique.

    Our confirmed speaker is ORIE SHAFER, Professor at the Advanced Science Research Center at CUNY, who studies circadian rhythms in flies.

Victoria Hallerman is a poet and writer. The Aerialist, won The Bright Hill Prize for poetry and was published in 2007. She won a Pushcart Prize and the 92nd Street Y’s Discovery, and has published widely in Poetry, The Nation and other journals and magazines. For a taste of her upcoming memoir, Starts Wednesday: A Year in the Life of a Movie Palace, check out her blog at www.startswednesday.com. The book and blog are based on her experience running the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, in 1976.  A 2008 memoir about the effect of Prostate Cancer on her marriage, How We Survived Prostate Cancer, is available from William Morrow.

Andy Kass is a pre-Bridge Islander and resident of West Brighton. He is a member of the Staten Island OutLOUD Memoir Workshop and Mystery Writers of America, and was the first associate editor of Book/Mark: A Quarterly Review of Small Press Literature. His writings have appeared in Glimmer Train, Central Park, shinbone alley, Outerbridge, Z:Miscellaneous and The New York Times, and may be sample at http://siwriter.com. He is returning to public music-making after a long hiatus.

The son of a New York Irish labor union organizer with roots in Co. Roscommon, Bob was a student of the legendary Eric Darling from whom he learned banjo and guitar. His repertoire displays a great love of Irish­American and maritime songs He is one of the mainstays of the monthly sea shanty sing on Staten Island.

MUSIC: MDXV  Staten Island-based electronic music producer, graphic artist and MC. Drawing on influences from other producers such as Daft Punk and Kanye West as well as vintage funk and disco music. In April 2018 we submitted a 52-page Grand Jury Petition to the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York with 57 Exhibits dispositive of pre-planted explosives, controlled demolition, bombs in the World Trade Center Towers responsible for their destruction."

The National Endowment for the Arts has chosen Staten Island OutLOUD to present The Big Read in our community. This is our tenth consecutive award from the NEA, and we are proud to present a series of varied free events, exploring Nathaniel Philbrick’s gripping story, In the Heart of the Sea.

   Michael Ossei is a British born acoustic musician with roots in Kumasi, Ghana.  He is a singer-songwriter with an intimate and poetic style. His songs tell stories of love and loss, and hate and indifference.  His melodies are transmitted with the aid of mellow, soulful singing and a harmonious guitar style

Masters of Folk: BOB CONROY, NORM PEDERSON, JEAN PEDERSON
     The son of a New York Irish labor union organizer, Bob was a student of the legendary banjo virtuoso Eric Darling from whom he learned banjo and guitar. His repertoire displays a great love of Irish­-American and maritime songs. He is one of the mainstays of the monthly sea shanty sing-along on Staten Island. Bob Conroy and Norm Pederson are committed to the preservation of traditional folk songs that illustrate the life, values, and work ethic of the American people. They have been performing traditional music since the folk revival of the 1960s, and they have appeared at folk festivals and clubs in the UK and Ireland, as well as in the American Roots series at Lincoln Center, Historic Richmond Town, The Noble Maritime Collection, Mystic Seaport Festival, and various other venues in the Northeast. Mr. Conroy plays five-string banjo, six-string guitar, and twelve-string guitar. Mr. Pederson plays multiple instruments, including fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and guitar. Jean Pederson, Norm’s wife, grew up in the folk revival. The Irish side of her family are noted singers and musicians in NYC and Washington, D.C. Jean and Norm wrote and performed the music for an off-off-Broadway play produced at the famed Café La Mama in the ’70s. Jean has written and performed Christian music for her own church for forty years.
