ROUND-SINGING
"Rounds" are songs that repeat over and
over, with the different singers starting at different points
in the song so that there is created a weaving of the words and
melodies.

ROW YOUR BOAT, GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM" etc. Other rounds
have more complex melodies, but usually they are still relatively
easy to learn and sing with others. Mucho fun....try it,

MOVIE: EMPTY
OCEANS, EMPTY NETS
If you knew nothing about fishing, this would be an awesome introduction.
From Indonesian out-rigger canoes to Bering Sea factory trawlers,
from cyanided reefs and dynamited fish in the western Pacific to
tuna weirs in the Mediterranean, it's all here.
Using vivid images of sweeping nets full of fish unloading their
contents onto commercial fishing boats, Empty Oceans,
Empty Nets highlights the overwhelming magnitude
of the annual worldwide harvest of more than 100 million metric
tons of seafood. It also explores the stark reality of the 22
million tons of fish and other sea life that are caught and discarded
by fishers each year. Viewers are transported to bustling and
exotic international fish markets, where tons of fresh and frozen
fish are sold each day to supply an insistent global demand and
consumers will learn how they can make the biggest difference
of all in sustaining the world’s ocean fisheries.

WEAPONS IN SPACE with
Bruce Gagnon.
Bruce Gagnon is a co-founder and the Coordinator of the Global
Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space. He
will present material about the on-going weaponization of
space and the implications of that build-up.
Sponsored by Peace Action of Staten
Island,
Peace Action of New York State,
Code Pink New York. Contact 917-362-0897 for
more information.
"Vision
for the Peace Movement: 62 Years After Hiroshima and Nagasaki" "We
must do as the old saying goes – follow the money. And
increasingly the money in the U.S. today is in weapons production.
It is abundantly clear that no real alternative sustainable
technology investment will be possible on the scale needed
to avert catastrophic global warming without conversion of
the military industrial complex [to a peaceful humanitarian
agenda]. It is imperative that the peace movement, environmental
movement, social justice movement, and labor movements create
a unifying vision and political demand calling on Congress
to use our hard-earned tax dollars for this conversion of the
military industrial complex <http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/03/28/147/>.
By converting the military [to peaceful activities] we can
make large strides to dealing with greenhouse gases, create
new sustainable industries and stop our free fall into endless
war." -- Bruce

ACTION MOVIE: "MILITARY MYTHS"
Young people today are smacked with military advertisements
and recruiters coming into their schools and communities
offering sign-up bonuses, money for education, and job training.
MILITARY MYTHS takes a critical look at the military's promises.
The producers contrast media representations of war and military
life with the personal experiences of veterans who have gone
to war. Interviews with activists and students are also presented
along with statistics from the Veterans Administration, CCCO,
SLDN, and recent Pentagon studies that lay clear the myths
of military life.
Running time: 28 minutes. |

massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options
and hope.

NEW YORK CALLING: From Blackout To Bloomberg, LIVE!
NEW YORK CALLING is the title of an acclaimed new collection
of essays and photos by a stellar group of contributers about
NYC's 5 dramatically changing boroughs over the last three
decades, edited by historian MARSHALL BERMAN and journalist
BRIAN BERGER. |
A review excerpt:
"New York
City in the 1970s was the setting for Taxi Driver, Annie
Hall, and Saturday Night Fever, the proving
grounds for graffiti, punk, hip-hop, and all manner of other
public spectacle. Musicians, artists, and writers could subsist
even in Manhattan, while immigrants from the world over were
reinventing the city in their own image.
New York Calling unlocks life
in the unpolished Apple, where, it seemed, anything could
happen." MORE> |
|
|
At
ETG, editor BRIAN BERGER and two of the authors, ROBERT SIETSEMA
and STEVE MALUK, will present live readings, Q&A and
a slide show of images from this highly regarded new work,
about "the lost world of edginess, eccentricity and
urban anomie that characterized the unpolished Big Apple
of the 70's and 80's". Don't miss it!
-- -- -- -- --
It’s a long way from old Brooklyn
to the new Times Square. But New York Calling reminds
us of what has changed – and what’s been lost – along
the way.
