On Thursday, Sept 6, New Yorkers will gather to add our voices to national and global call for immediate, bold, effective approaches to Climate, Jobs, and Justice. On the eve of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, we will take to the streets demanding that our local elected officials move beyond the nice talk and take the steps we know are needed to confront the climate crisis. (Actions in CA, throughout the U.S. and around the world are happening on Sept. 8th, but we did not want to conflict with the NYC Labor Day Parade being held that day so we're hitting the streets on Sept. 6th!)

"FALSE FLAGS" : Teach-in about this powerful and long-relied-upon military deception technique, used globally for centuries for political expediency.

From Wikipedia: A false flag is a covert operation designed to deceive; the deception creates the appearance of a particular party, group, or nation being responsible for some activity, disguising the actual source of responsibility.

The term "false flag" originally referred to pirate ships that flew flags of countries as a disguise to prevent their victims from fleeing or preparing for battle. Sometimes the flag would remain and the blame for the attack be laid incorrectly on another country. The term today extends beyond naval encounters to include countries that organize attacks on themselves and make the attacks appear to be by enemy nations or terrorists, thus giving the nation that was supposedly attacked a pretext for domestic repression and foreign military aggression.

BOOK: Maurice P. Fortune's "NOW EYE SEE"- a gripping autobiography by Maurice Fortune who now makes his home on Staten island.  He describes going from picking blueberries and wearing a straw hat on a farm in Maryland, to becoming the personal secretary to a permanent mission to the United Nations, his careers as a songwriter and professional recording artist, business owner, and eventually having to reinvent himself (again!) after losing everything.  An inspiring story, a "tale of fortitude and faith in oneself and in God".

MUSIC: TSU SHI MA MI RE Art Punk Rock Trio TsuShiMaMiRe from Tokyo, Japan! Uniquely creative songwriting played with power and finess.

   Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re is an all-girl Japanese rock trio. Their style is eclectic punk rock, mixing noisy and pop instrumental sounds with idiosyncratic, quirky, often funny or disturbing lyrics. They are one of the many bands to have become famous in the United States through the Austin, Texas South by Southwest music festival, and also through their performances at anime conventions, with the Suicide Girls, and at Benten Label's "Japan Girls Nite" U.S. tours.

AMERICAN APARTHEID: the focus will be on voting and voting rights as journalist Stephanie Woodard presents her acclaimed work, "American Apartheid: The Native American Struggle for Self-Determination".
    Speakers from Sioux reservations in South Dakota will join us via Zoom video and tell us about exciting, innovative high-tech support for Native voting access and the prospect of a whole lot of Native voters making it to polls where they've been targeted and suppressed, especially in North Dakota with its very close Senate race.

“The Wrong Grave” is a short story that is really about the writer’s process, how we dig and dig until we find the right spirit. In this workshop, we will all engage in the conversation of the writer’s process and craft. Using actually lines from the short story as prompts, we will, as a group, talk about our process’ and expand on our own.

Thomas Fucaloro is the author of two books of poetry published by Three Rooms Press, most recently It Starts from the Belly and Blooms, which received rave reviews.

SIAMS: BEATLES WHITE ALBUM ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE
   Four Staten Island Bands will give their interpretations of 18 of the 30 songs from this classic double-album, the Beatles’ White Album, which was released 50 years ago this month. 1968, a pivotal year all around.
   Multi-media show: Elle will be your MC, presenting factoids about the making of the White Album, and related images will be projected.

Digging Up the Dirt

A spoken word performance, inspired by Kelly Link’s “The Wrong Grave” – part of her short story collection, “Pretty Monsters”. Kelly Link’s work has been described as “pushing the boundaries of literary fiction in works that combine the surreal and fantastical with the concerns and emotional realism. This event is part of Staten Island OutLOUD’s series for The National Endowment for the Arts / The Big Read.

ADVENTURES IN WORDS AND MUSIC
Join The Lean Rat Books & Neue Merzhalle are pleased to present Adventures in Words & Music,
an evening’s entertainment featuring a reading and book signing by JONATHAN LEITER for his newly published memoir, "Adventures in Meatpacking", along with musical performances by KLEYKO & PATCHES and PHOEBE BLUE.

Jonathan Leiter is a Staten Island-based artist and writer. His newly published memoir, Adventures in Meatpacking, is a recounting of the year he spent living as a young, gay man in Manhattan’s meatpacking district during the mid-1980’s, an exotic, tumultuous time when HIV/AIDS was starting to devastate communities. He has been creating visual art related to HIV/AIDS and is an active archive member of Visual AIDS (www.visualaids.org).

Kleyko & Patches are partners in Staten Island, New York, making music, art & art stuffs. Their debut album is entitled Animal Bones. Their music is available through the music streaming site Bandcamp (kleykoandpatches.bandcamp.com).

Phoebe Blue is a singer, songwriter, activist and artist. Staten Island’s queen of Anti-Folk music, Phoebe fronts the group Phoebe Blue & the Make Baleaves. (http://phoebeblue.bandcamp.com) and hosts a weekly open mike every Tuesday at Staten Island’s Cargo Café.

  Tyler is a Staten Island based spoken word artist with a BA in special education. Tyler spends his days making the arts accessible to people with developmental disabilities. When focusing on his own work, he provides a raw and vulnerable introspective on being a fat queer trans man in Trumps America.
  Amanda is a singer and poet from Staten Island, whose work proves that emotion, and sincerity are all the training you need. Amanda also spends her days helping those with disabilities and has a heart that is clearly seen in everything she says or sings!
  So, what happens when a couple of queer people with too many feelings get together? This!
  Letters and Music is a night of spoken word poetry and song that is sure to get you right in the feels
