BOOK EVENT: "AND WE WRITE: SURVIVING CANCER- Let the Healing Begin": Shell Lewis compiled this book of personal writings about cancer and healing by many experiencers. Today we have readings from the book, and the book is available to buy and support this work.
   About the book:
Explore the fear, grief, anger, acceptance, and joy that cancer causes in one’s life. Poetry Fiction Autobiography A safe haven for cancer victims.
The book illustrates that the relentless fear and uninhibited tears are emotions that all cancer victims face and eventually overcome.

“Shell Lewis’s book is a moving compilation of stories from the heart. Her subjects give honest and vivid descriptions of their battles with cancer or recount the struggles of those they love. Shell offers an array of stories that will elicit tears and even laughter. Shell’s book is a fascinating page-turner—a poignant journey for the reader.” —Maria Eftimiades, Author and Former New York City Bureau Chief for People magazine

POETRY and PERFORMANCES:
THE TYPEWRITERGIRLS return their DADA to ETG, presenting a unique coagulation.
TypewriterGirls
The Typewriter Girls
TYPEWRITERGIRLS PORTRAIT OF THE DADAIST AS A PUBLIC SCHOOL OFFICIAL
Poetry Cabaret Exploring the Marriage of Art, Education, and Absurdity
NYC, NY--The TypewriterGirls have long considered themselves to be unique and enthusiastic purveyors of knowledge to the public in general and budding Dadaists in particular; however, on Friday, February 12th at the ETG Cafe (208 Bay St), they begin to take their roles as alternative educators perhaps a little too seriously.

Can the TypewriterGirls turn one of their shenanigan-filled, Dada-bred poetry cabarets into an state sanctioned institution of education? Come and find out if is it's possible to successfully integrate poetry, comedy, dance, magic, whiskey games sponsored by Tuthilltown Whiskey, art, and chaos into a coherent lesson plan at TypewriterGirls Portrait of the Dadaist as a Public School Official: Doors will open at 7PM with the show starting promptly at 8PM free of cover .

Will the DEA shut down their classes on consciousness-expanding? Will Homeland Security prevent lessons on “Starting Small Riots in Urban Environments”? Exactly how many governmental and social institutions will attempt to close their doors before evenings end?

Fortunately, the TypewriterGirls have assembled a crack team of artists with similar interests in spreading enlightenment to the masses: A newly formed Dada dance troupe will be serving as gym instructors for those of us who found dodge ball and push-ups to be cruel sadistic rituals and, of course, there to embody transcendent language as wisdom will be renowned Chinese poet and performer Huang Xiang, Dada Queen poets Kat Georges, and poet Krystal Languell.

  "Fluxed into another world."

Fluxus art enlarges the meaning of art by challenging the public's definition of it, blending different artistic media and disciplines, using words, actions and images in usual or unexpected ways. The Fluxus movement which began in the 1960s by George Maciunas, includes artists- Yoko Ono, John Cage, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Stan Brakhage, George Brecht, Allen Ginsberg, Alan Kaprow and La Monte Young. Presently an international community of Fluxus artist continue the traditions and produce events where they meet up throughout the world.

And what can we learn about our own lives from such comic book characters as Superman, Batman, and Spiderman? Come hear writer, Avi Gvili, discuss these beloved characters in relation to this central principle of Aesthetic Realism, the education founded by poet Eli Siegel: All beauty is a making one of opposites, and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves. Spiderman, for example, has the power of super strength and a heightened “spider sense.” Yet, he has kindness and wants to help people. Isn’t this how we want to be?

FREEDOM RIDERS   50th Anniversary

In the spring of 1961, a group of courageous Americans boarded buses to challenge racial segregation in the deep South.

It was a series of dangerous rides; Freedom Riders were ambushed, buses were firebombed, many were severely beaten.

But they didn't stop.

And as their journey countinued, more Freedom Riders volunteered to join them.

We'll read the personal memoirs of many Freedom Riders, and eye-witness accounts of this compelling American story.

Staten Islanders who participated in the Freedom Rides will join us to share their own stories.

Music by Gary and Joan Moore.

BETH GORRIE leads this community read-aloud project.

11-11-11: DRUM CIRCLE: JOIN THE HEART WAVE

As with all energy, the electromagnetic waves of the heart are never destroyed, but spread throughout the Universe to increasingly subtle degree as the energy sphere expands.
The heart is the most powerful source of electromagnetic waves in the body. Recent scientific research has determined that the hearts electromagnetic generator emits waves that are 60 times stronger than that of the brain. The signal is so strong that it creates an electromagnetic field that surrounds the body in 360 degrees and can actually be measured up to three to four feet outside the body.  The heart's field is not static. It changes, depending on what we are feeling. For example, when we are feeling emotions like anger or frustration, the frequencies in the field become chaotic and disordered. On the other hand when we are experiencing emotions like compassion, care, appreciation or love, the frequencies in the field becomes more ordered and coherent. We can say that through the electromagnetic field created by the heart we are  broadcasting our emotions like radio waves.

On 11-11-11, our drumming circle will participate in a special global meditation excersize to engender a wave of heart energy that will roll across the planet and radiate out into our universe. Using 9pm as everyone's local time to join in, participants around the planet will make an intentional effort to generate love vibrations with their heart. As the time zone moves across the planet, a wave of this energy will sweep the globe.

After a period of free drumming together, we will follow a guided process to generate these special heart waves, followed by more drumming. Come on up and play with us.
